You start among palm trees and parking lots at Sky Harbor. A few hours north, the saguaros give way to pine forest, the air cools, and the ground ends at the South Rim, about 7,000 feet up. It's one of the biggest changes of scenery you can drive in a single morning.

Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX) is a strong alternative to Las Vegas for the Grand Canyon. It is a large hub with year-round flights, and the drive north climbs from desert to pine forest — with an easy detour through Sedona.

Quick answer

  • Drive PHX → Grand Canyon South Rim: about 230 miles, 3.5–4 hours direct [A].
  • Best for: 5–8 day trips: Grand Canyon South Rim plus Sedona, Flagstaff and optionally Page.
  • Season: PHX is pleasant in spring and autumn. The South Rim is open year-round but can see snow in winter [A].
  • Realistic all-in cost, 7 days, 2 people: about $1,400–4,200 by campervan or $1,900–5,200 by Class C for US residents; $1,600–4,400 / $2,100–5,400 if you live outside the US [A], the cost table below rounded outward to the nearest $100.
