Privacy policy

Short version: Runway to Rim has no user accounts, no newsletter, no comment forms, no analytics and no advertising trackers. We set no cookies. Your browser stores one small entry with your privacy choice. If you email us, we use your message only to reply.

This policy is written under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR; German: DSGVO) and the German Telecommunications Digital Services Data Protection Act (TDDDG). Last updated: 29 October 2026.

1. Who is responsible (controller)

Carsten Watsack
Runway to Rim (sole trader)
Adolf Quad Str. 1
53229 Bonn
Germany
Email: info@runwaytorim.com

We are not required to appoint a data protection officer. For any privacy question, write to the address above. See also our Legal notice.

2. Visiting this website: server and hosting

To deliver pages to you, the web server must process your IP address together with technical request data (date and time, page requested, browser type, referring page). This happens automatically with every visit.

  • Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR. Our legitimate interest is delivering the site securely and reliably.
  • Logs: our server is currently configured not to keep per-visit access logs. Technical error logs may occasionally contain an IP address; they are used only to fix faults and defend against attacks, and are deleted once no longer needed for that purpose.
  • Hosting provider: Hetzner Online GmbH, Industriestr. 25, 91710 Gunzenhausen, Germany (data centre in Germany). Hetzner processes data on our behalf under a data processing agreement (Art. 28 GDPR).

Fonts, search, maps, charts and the trip cost calculator all run from our own server or inside your browser. We do not load Google Fonts, embedded maps, videos, social media plug-ins or any other third-party content when you open a page.

3. Cookies and storage on your device

We currently set no cookies. When you make a choice in our privacy banner, your browser saves it in its local storage so we don’t ask again:

NameTypePurposeKeptCategory
rtr_consentLocal storage (your browser only; not sent to our server)Remembers your choice for optional categories (analytics, marketing) and when you made itUntil you change your choice or clear your browser dataStrictly necessary
rtr_calcLocal storage (your browser only; not sent to our server)Remembers your last inputs in the trip cost calculator (route, days, people, options), written only after you change an inputUntil you press “Reset to route defaults” or clear your browser dataStrictly necessary for the tool you use
rtr_ck_packing, rtr_ck_abroadLocal storage (your browser only; not sent to our server)Remembers which items you ticked on the packing list and the ready-to-book checklist, written only after you tick somethingUntil you press “Clear all ticks” or clear your browser dataStrictly necessary for the tool you use
rtr_tripLocal storage (your browser only; not sent to our server)Your Rig Passport and trip plan, shared between our tools: vehicle type and size, route, start date, arrival details, and the names, numbers and notes you type on My Trip. Written only after you change an input or press a button in one of those toolsUntil you press “Forget it” or “Delete everything our tools saved” on My Trip, or clear your browser dataStrictly necessary for the tool you use

Storing this entry is strictly necessary to respect your decision (§ 25(2) no. 2 TDDDG; Art. 6(1)(c) and (f) GDPR). It contains no identifier and is never sent to us.

Calculator and checklists. The entries rtr_calc, rtr_trip, rtr_ck_packing and rtr_ck_abroad only exist if you use those tools; they hold your inputs or ticks and nothing else, and are needed to provide the function you asked for (§ 25(2) no. 2 TDDDG). When you copy a share link, your inputs or ticks are written into the page address; you decide who gets it. Opening such a link sends that address to our server like any page request (section 2).

Optional categories. The banner also lets you allow “Analytics” and “Marketing & affiliate tracking”. Both are switched off by default, and no such tools are in use today. If we ever add one, we will name the provider, the cookies and the purpose here first, and it will only run after you have switched the category on (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR, § 25(1) TDDDG). You can withdraw your consent at any time with effect for the future:

4. When you email us

If you write to info@runwaytorim.com, we process your email address, name (if given) and message to answer you. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (answering your enquiry), or Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR if your message concerns a contract. We delete the correspondence when it is settled, unless statutory retention periods (for example under German commercial or tax law) require us to keep it longer.

5. Links to other websites and affiliate links

We link to official sources and providers such as the National Park Service, Recreation.gov and rental companies. Nothing is transmitted to them until you click; after that, their own privacy policies apply. There are no affiliate links on this site today. If we add them later, each will be labelled, and any tracking that goes beyond a simple link will require your consent under “Marketing & affiliate tracking”. See our affiliate disclosure.

6. No sale, no profiling

We do not sell or rent personal data, do not build profiles and do not use automated decision-making within the meaning of Art. 22 GDPR.

7. Transfers outside the EU

Hosting takes place in Germany. We do not transfer personal data to countries outside the EU/EEA. If that changes (for example through a future analytics or affiliate provider), we will update this policy and explain the safeguards used.

8. Your rights

You have the right to:

  • access the personal data we hold about you (Art. 15 GDPR);
  • have incorrect data corrected (Art. 16) and data erased (Art. 17);
  • restrict processing (Art. 18) and receive your data in a portable format (Art. 20);
  • object at any time, on grounds relating to your particular situation, to processing based on Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (Art. 21);
  • withdraw any consent at any time with effect for the future (Art. 7(3)) — for this site, via “Cookie settings” in the footer;
  • lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority (Art. 77). The authority responsible for us is: Landesbeauftragte für Datenschutz und Informationsfreiheit Nordrhein-Westfalen (LDI NRW), Kavalleriestraße 2–4, 40213 Düsseldorf, Germany. You may also contact the authority where you live or work.

To use your rights, email info@runwaytorim.com.

9. Security

All pages are delivered over an encrypted connection (HTTPS/TLS).

10. Changes

We update this policy when the site changes, for example before adding analytics or affiliate links. The date at the top shows the current version.
