From the airport, the Front Range is a ragged line on the western horizon. By evening you can be parked beneath it near Estes Park, and the next day Trail Ridge Road carries you above the trees to 12,183 feet, where the National Park Service says the air is usually 20 to 30 degrees colder than in town.

Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the easiest big parks to reach from a major airport. From Denver International (DEN) to Estes Park is under two hours, so you can land, pick up your RV, and sleep near the park the same night.

Quick answer

  • Drive DEN → Estes Park: about 70–80 miles, 1.5–2 hours [A].
  • Best for: 4–7 day trips, or as the first stop on a longer Colorado loop.
  • Timed entry: in 2026 needed 9 am–2 pm from May 22 to October 12, and 5 am–6 pm for the Bear Lake Road corridor to October 18; a park campground booking includes it (NPS, checked 2026-10-28). 2027 dates are not out yet.
  • Trail Ridge Road: closed from about mid-October to late May; its average winter closure date is October 23 (NPS, checked 2026-10-28). Status line: (970) 586-1222.
  • Realistic all-in cost, 6 days, 2 people: about $1,200–3,600 by campervan or $1,600–4,500 by Class C for US residents; $1,400–3,800 / $1,800–4,700 if you live outside the US [A], the cost table below rounded outward to the nearest $100.
  • Flying in from abroad? Licence, age, deposit and a ready-to-book checklist, then check whether you can pick up the day you land.
