Two motorhomes can look the same in the listing photos and still end up hundreds of dollars apart once the trip is booked. One belongs to a private owner on a marketplace platform. The other comes off a company lot with a standard fleet behind it. The difference hides in miles, kits, insurance and fees, and that is where this page looks.
When you fly into Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Denver or Phoenix to rent an RV, you have two kinds of options:
- Marketplace (peer-to-peer): private owners and small dealers list their RVs on a platform. You book through the platform, which handles payment and insurance.
- Fleet: a rental company owns a standardised fleet and rents from its own depots.
Quick answer
| Marketplace | Fleet | |
|---|---|---|
| Nightly price | Often lower for older vehicles, higher for premium ones [A] | More standard, peak-season surcharges [A] |
| Vehicle choice | Huge: vintage vans to big Class A | Limited models, all similar |
| One-way rentals | Rare | Common between major hubs (one-way fee) [A] |
| Pickup | Owner's home, storage lot, sometimes delivery to hotel/campground | Depot with fixed hours [A] |
| Consistency | Varies by owner — read reviews | Predictable |
| Miles | Often a daily allowance, then per-mile fee [A] | Often per-mile or mileage packages [A] |
| Best for | Round trips, specific vehicle wishes, flexible travellers | One-way trips, first-timers, international visitors who want a standard process |

Real price for 10 days (example, 2 people)
A rough example for a round trip from Las Vegas in late spring [A]. Fleet lines use the same fleet fee example as our cost pages ($0.39 a mile, $50 prep, $125 vehicle kit, $75 per personal kit, checked 2026-10-27); marketplace platform fee 10–12% of the base rent (Outdoorsy: 10%). Base rents and the other marketplace lines are our estimates.
| Cost item | Marketplace campervan | Fleet campervan | Marketplace Class C | Fleet Class C |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Base rent, 10 nights | $1,200 | $1,500 | $1,700 | $2,100 |
| Service / platform fee | $120–140 | $0 | $170–200 | $0 |
| Miles (1,000 mi) | $0–250 | $390 | $0–300 | $390 |
| Kits (kitchen, bedding) | often included | $275 | often included | $275 |
| Cleaning / prep | $100 | $50 | $150 | $50 |
| Insurance / protection upgrade | $150–300 | $150–350 | $200–400 | $200–400 |
| Total vehicle cost | $1,570–1,990 | $2,365–2,565 | $2,220–2,750 | $3,015–3,215 |
For scale: RVshare reports an average booking value of about $900 and Motorhome Republic an average booking above NZD 800 (2022 figure) — both lower than our 10-day example because many bookings are shorter or off-peak (checked 2026-10-26).
The takeaway: marketplace rentals often come out cheaper for round trips, but the gap shrinks once you add fees, and it disappears for one-way trips where marketplace supply is thin.

Questions that decide it
- Round trip or one-way? One-way → fleet almost always.
- Arriving late at night? Depots have fixed hours. Some marketplace owners are flexible, others are not. Ask before booking.
- First time in an RV? Fleet handovers tend to be standardised with a walkthrough video. Marketplace handovers depend on the owner.
- Do you need a specific vehicle? (a 4x4 van, a pet-friendly RV) → marketplace.
- International driver's licence? Age, licence and deposit rules differ by platform: Cruise America from 21, Outdoorsy 21 with a young driver fee, RVshare 25. See renting an RV from abroad.
Checklist before you pay — either type
- Full fee sheet in writing: mileage, generator, cleaning, late return, pets, smoking.
- What insurance is included, what the deductible is, and what is excluded (roof, tyres, windscreen, unpaved roads).
- Exact pickup address, hours, and the time needed for the walkthrough.
- Cancellation policy and deposit amount.
