Recreation.gov for national park trips: when campsites open, how lotteries work, and what to book first

Booking windows, fees and rules checked 2026-10-27, length limits, cancellation tools and BLM rules added 2026-10-28, on Recreation.gov, nps.gov, blm.gov and fs.usda.gov. Values marked [A] are our own estimates or advice.

On a fly-in RV trip, the campsites decide the dates, not the other way round. Almost every campground inside the parks on our routes is booked through Recreation.gov, the US government's booking site for campgrounds, permits and timed entry. The same site runs the Angels Landing lottery and Rocky Mountain's entry reservations. This guide explains how it works, when each thing opens, and which bookings you can safely leave until later. Every rule below has a source and a check date.

Quick answer

  • Most park campgrounds open 6 months ahead on Recreation.gov, usually at 10 am Eastern (8 am Mountain, 7 am Pacific). Each campground sets its own window, so check its "Seasons & Booking" tab [S1][S2].
  • From Europe, that's usually 16:00 in Berlin or Paris and 15:00 in London. For a few weeks in March and around late October, when US and European clocks change on different dates, it's an hour earlier [A].
  • Sites in your cart are held for 15 minutes. Log in early, save a card in the digital wallet, and use one browser tab [S1].
  • Cancelling costs $10 before the late-cancellation cut-off. Cancel the day before or on arrival day and you also lose the first night [S3].
  • Lotteries are different: you apply in a window, your odds are the same whenever you apply, and the application fee is not refunded (Angels Landing: $6 to apply, $3 per person if you win) [S10].
  • 2026–27 changes: Arches has no timed entry in 2026 [S5]. Rocky Mountain kept timed entry, May 22 to mid-October 2026 [S16]. Yellowstone's five lodge-run campgrounds move to Recreation.gov for the 2027 season [S14].
  • Check length before you pay: limits run from under 20 ft to 45 ft at most campgrounds (Yellowstone's Fishing Bridge: 95 ft), and many single sites are shorter than the campground limit. See the length table [S21][S24][S25].
  • Sold out? Set alerts, watch the 14-day campgrounds and same-day releases, and keep a legal plan B on BLM or forest land: cancellation plan · plan B.
  • Need a ticket just to get in? Only Rocky Mountain in 2026. All nine parks in one table: Do I need a reservation to get in?

How Recreation.gov works

Recreation.gov is a booking platform, not the park. The National Park Service and other agencies set the rules for each campground or permit: the season, the booking window, the length limits and the cancellation terms. Recreation.gov only sells the reservations [S2]. That's why two campgrounds in the same park can open on different days.

When things open on our routes

Times are the park's local time unless stated. "6 months" means a rolling window: the date six months before your arrival, at the release time [S1].

Enter the first night you want at a campground. You get the day its window opens, for the two windows used on our routes: 6 months (Watchman, North Campground, Mather, Devils Garden, Fruita, Grand Teton, Yellowstone, Rocky Mountain) and 14 days (Zion South, Bryce Sunset, Lava Point) [S9][S11][S18]. The release time is shown in your own time zone, assuming the usual 10 am Eastern [S1].

Use your arrival night, not your flight date.

Rolling windows can shift a day around month ends and holidays, and some campgrounds use other times or release blocks. Always confirm on the campground's "Seasons & Booking" tab [S2] [A].

What to book early, and what can wait

PriorityWhatWhy
1. The morning it opensWatchman (Zion), Mather (Grand Canyon), Devils Garden (Arches), Fruita (Capitol Reef), Yellowstone and Grand Teton campgrounds for July–AugustFew sites, high demand. NPS describes Watchman and Devils Garden as full nearly every night in season [S4][S9]
2. On a fixed dateAngels Landing seasonal lottery; Rocky Mountain timed entryFixed windows months ahead; if you miss them, only the day-before options are left [S10][S16]
3. Two weeks outZion South Campground, Bryce Sunset CampgroundOnly open 14 days ahead. Good backups, not a plan A [S9][S11]
4. A few days outFiery Furnace permit; Angels Landing day-before lottery; Rocky Mountain evening-before releaseShort windows by design [S6][S10][S16]
5. Can't be bookedWillow Flat (Island in the Sky), Needles Loop A, Devils Garden November–February, Mammoth in winterFirst-come, first-served. Arrive early in spring and fall [S4][S7][S13]
Not neededEntry to Zion, Grand Canyon, Arches (2026) and Canyonlands; the Zion shuttleNo reservation, only the entrance fee [S5][S7][S12][S17]. No timed entry at Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Yellowstone or Grand Teton either; confirmed on nps.gov on 2026-10-28, see all nine parks in one table

Private RV parks outside the parks (Las Vegas, Moab, Springdale, Jackson, West Yellowstone) don't use Recreation.gov. They are the easiest nights to fill, so book them last [A].

Will your RV fit? Length limits by campground

Know your length? See which campgrounds on your route have sites long enough →

Rental Class C motorhomes are often somewhere around 22 to 31 ft, campervans around 19 to 21 ft [A — check the exact length of the model you are quoted]. Campgrounds count the whole unit: motorhome plus anything towed, bumper to bumper [S21][S23]. Two things to check before you pay:

  1. The campground limit (table below), then
  2. the site itself. Each site page on Recreation.gov lists a "Max Vehicle Length" under Permitted Equipment, and many sites are shorter than the campground maximum. At Devils Garden, for example, one site takes 40 ft and another only 30 ft [S24]. Mather says only five sites (120, 121, 128, 172, 185) fit a 30 ft trailer [S21].
CampgroundMax length (vehicle + anything towed)Watch out for

Grand Canyon: Mather / Desert View30 ft / 30 ftMather is dry camping only under Stage 4 water restrictions; Desert View has no dump station [S20][S21]

Roads matter as much as sites. From June 7, 2026, Zion enforces limits on the Zion–Mount Carmel Highway: vehicles over 35'9" long, 11'4" tall or 7'10" wide can't use it and must come and go via the South Entrance in Springdale [S18]. At Bryce Canyon, vehicles over 23 ft can't park in the Bryce Amphitheater during shuttle hours [S22]. Route detail: Las Vegas day-by-day.

Booking before you have an RV? Reserve a site long enough for the biggest vehicle you might rent, and write down each site's limit. Then only accept RV quotes that fit [A].

Booking day, step by step

  1. Make the account weeks before. Check your password and contact details. Save a payment card in the digital wallet so checkout is one click [S1].
  2. Work out the opening date. Count six months back from your arrival night and put the release time in your calendar, converted to your time zone [S1]. Example: for an arrival at Watchman on May 12, 2027, the date to watch is November 12, 2026 [A — confirm on the campground's Seasons & Booking tab].
  3. Know your vehicle length. Campgrounds filter by length, and some sites are too short for a Class C. At Watchman, loops C and D take no vehicles of 19 ft or more [S9]. Needles sites max out at 28 ft [S7], Mather at 30 ft [S12]. No RV yet? Book a site long enough for the largest vehicle you would rent [A].
  4. Be on the page early. Sync to the Recreation.gov clock and refresh at the release time. Use one tab in one browser; several logged-in tabs can trigger extra reCAPTCHA checks that slow you down [S1].
  5. Add to cart, then pay within 15 minutes. After that the site goes back to the pool [S1]. If no single site is free for every night, you can string several sites together [S1].
  6. Missed it? Set an availability alert for your dates. It emails everyone with the same alert, so act fast [S1]. Many campgrounds also list cancelled sites again, sometimes the same day (Fruita, for example) [S8].

Lotteries vs. first-come: Angels Landing as the example

A lottery replaces the race at 10 am with a random draw. Zion's Angels Landing permit works like this [S10]:

Hike datesLottery open (8 am – 11:59 pm MT)Results
March 1 – May 31January 1–20January 25
June 1 – August 31April 1–20April 25
September 1 – November 30July 1–20July 25
December 1 – February 28October 1–20October 25

Cancellations and changes

What this means in practice: holding a campsite while your flights and RV are not yet booked usually costs $10 if you cancel in time [S3]. Please do cancel as soon as you know you won't go. Someone else is waiting for that site [S1].

Missed it? A cancellation-watch plan

Sold out on opening day is not the end. People cancel, and at Rocky Mountain a cancelled site "immediately becomes available again" on Recreation.gov [S23]. At Fruita, cancelled reservations can be booked "even same day" [S8]. Here is the order we would work through [A]:

  1. Change the shape of the stay. Recreation.gov suggests avoiding Friday and Saturday nights, for example Sunday to Thursday [S1]. Split the stay over two sites if no single site is free for every night [S1].
  2. Set Recreation.gov's own availability alert for your dates. It's free, but it goes to everyone watching the same dates, so it's no guarantee [S1].
  3. Calendar the short windows. Zion South opens 14 days ahead, and you can book up to two days past that window [S19]. Bryce Sunset is also 14 days [S22]. Rocky Mountain releases some sites on a short-term basis [S23].
  4. Know the same-day options. Mather sells first-come sites in person each morning (NPS: 15 sites from 8 am; the Recreation.gov page says about 20, usually gone by 11 am) [S20][S21]. Devils Garden is first-come November–February, Willow Flat and Needles Loop A are first-come all season [S4][S7].
  5. Consider a paid or third-party alert service (below), and keep checking yourself.
  6. Have a plan B night in a private RV park, a national forest campground, or on legal dispersed land (next section).

Third-party alert services

These sites watch Recreation.gov for openings and message you. They don't book for you; you still book on Recreation.gov yourself. We haven't tested them and have no deal with any of them; the descriptions come from their own pages [S26][S27][S28].

On bots: Recreation.gov says it has defences against bots and has seen no large-scale abuse, though some single reservations may be helped by scripts [S2]. Alerts are fine. We would not use anything that books or holds sites automatically: one account, one tab, your own click [S1] [A].

RV-specific rules that catch people out

Plan B: BLM, national forest and dispersed camping

Sold out? The full plan B guide: park by park, with stay limits and RV lengths →

Around most of these parks there is public land run by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) or the US Forest Service. Dispersed camping means camping there outside a developed campground. It's usually free, but there's no water, no toilets, no dump station and no host [S29][S33]. It can save a night. For a first fly-in trip in a rental, though, we see it as a back-up, not the plan [A].

The rules that apply almost everywhere

Hard limits: where you can't just park and sleep

Near each park

ParkWhat the agencies say
ZionBLM Hurricane Cliffs (east of Hurricane on SR-59 / SR-9): 56 designated sites, free, first-come, 14 days in 28; "not all sites are accessible to RVs or trailers" [S31]. On March 23, 2026 the BLM decided to limit camping along much of the SR-9 corridor to designated areas and to build new campgrounds [S32]. Expect change, and camp only where signs allow.
Bryce CanyonThe NPS points to national forest dispersed camping and private campgrounds outside the park; you are responsible for knowing the Forest Service rules [S22].
Grand Canyon South RimKaibab National Forest: camping "at-large" is allowed outside the park, at least 0.25 mile from Highway 64 [S33]. Ten X (Tusayan-Montane), a Forest Service campground: most sites reservable on Recreation.gov, 30 first-come; RVs can't fill holding tanks there [S34].
Arches & Canyonlands (Moab)Many areas near Moab and its campgrounds are closed to dispersed camping. Where it is allowed, use previously disturbed sites only; some zones are designated-site-only (brown post with a tent symbol). Portable toilet required [S35].
Capitol ReefThe NPS says the park "is surrounded by public lands where dispersed camping is allowed" and asks you to use them when Fruita is full [S8].
Grand TetonBridger-Teton National Forest: in the Jackson district, and at Toppings, Spread Creek, Pacific Creek and Colter Dump, max 5 days in 30 between May 1 and Labor Day; no camping within ¼ mile of Curtis Canyon Campground [S36]. Grassy Lake Road (Rockefeller Parkway): 14 free designated sites from mid-June, no water [S15].
YellowstoneNo camping outside designated campgrounds in the park [S13]. Plan B is a campground or RV park in a gateway town [A].
Rocky MountainWe haven't checked the national forest rules around Estes Park and Grand Lake for this guide. Plan B: private RV parks in Estes Park or Grand Lake [A].

The booking order we use for a fly-in RV trip

  1. Pick a date range with a few days of slack [A].
  2. Find the one campground that limits you most (Watchman, Mather, Devils Garden, Fruita, or Yellowstone in summer) and note the day its window opens [A].
  3. Book that campground, then the others, in the order they open [A].
  4. Then book the RV for exactly those dates, and check its length, height and width against the sites you booked [A].
  5. Then flights, then private RV parks for the first and last night [A].
  6. Calendar the short-notice items: lottery dates, 14-day campgrounds, Fiery Furnace [A].

Step 4 in practice: compare the RV's total length with the campground and site limits you booked, before you pay a deposit [A].

Flying in from outside the US? Do the licence, age and deposit checks before step 4: renting an RV from abroad.
