The rental agent will tell you the motorhome is "about 25 feet". The ranger at Zion's entrance station will want to know its width including the mirrors, to the inch [S1]. Most size problems on these trips aren't about driving skill. They're about a number nobody checked before booking.
This page collects every size limit we found on our five fly-in routes, from road restrictions to parking rules and campground lengths. Use it before you choose between a Class C and a campervan, and again before you book campsites. All limits come from the National Park Service, Recreation.gov or the Arizona Department of Transportation, with the date we checked them.
Quick answer
Have your vehicle’s numbers? Check them against every limit on this page →
- Measure four numbers: total length, width including mirrors, height including the roof A/C, and weight. Zion counts all four [S1].
- Zion–Mt. Carmel Highway (since June 7, 2026): max 35 ft 9 in long, 7 ft 10 in wide, 11 ft 4 in high. Over any one, you take the detour north via UT-20 to reach Bryce [S1].
- Over 22–23 ft = "oversized" at the Grand Canyon South Rim and in Bryce's amphitheater area: special lots only, or no parking during shuttle hours [S3][S4].
- Campgrounds: limits run from 14 ft (Jenny Lake, Grand Teton) to 95 ft (Fishing Bridge, Yellowstone). Most in-park campgrounds on our routes cap at 30–45 ft, and many single sites are shorter [S6][S9][S10][S11].
- Rule of thumb: a campervan of about 19–21 ft fits almost everywhere; a 30 ft Class C rules out several campgrounds and Zion's road east [A].
Roads with size limits
| Road | Limit | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Zion–Mt. Carmel Highway, Canyon Junction → East Entrance (incl. the tunnel) | Single vehicle: 35 ft 9 in long, 7 ft 10 in wide, 11 ft 4 in high, 50,000 lb. Mirrors, A/C units and racks count [S1] | No more escorts: over the limit, you are turned around. Detour to Bryce via UT-20, about 150 miles [S1]. Many Class C motorhomes are around 8 ft wide before mirrors, so measure [A] |
| Zion Canyon Scenic Drive | No private vehicles in shuttle season (usually March–November) [S2] | Park in Springdale or at the campground and ride the free shuttle |
| Hermit Road, Grand Canyon | Private vehicles only December–February, and only under 22 ft [S5] | Rest of the year: free Red Route shuttle |
| Old Fall River Road, Rocky Mountain | No vehicles over 25 ft, no trailers; unpaved, one-way uphill, grades up to 16% [S9] | Most Class Cs: use Trail Ridge Road instead |
| SR-89A, Oak Creek Canyon (Sedona → Flagstaff) | Trucks not allowed; vehicles over 40 ft restricted; three miles of switchbacks [S13] | In an RV we suggest I-17 instead [A] |
Parking for RVs in the parks
- Bryce Canyon: vehicles of 23 ft or more may not park at the visitor center, Sunrise, Sunset, Inspiration and Bryce Points or the lodge while shuttles run, typically mid-April to mid-October, 8 am–8 pm (to 6 pm in April and October). Paria View is always off-limits [S3].
- Grand Canyon South Rim: over 22 ft, use RV lots 1 (visitor center, fills by about 10 am), B (Market Plaza, about noon) or D (Backcountry Information Center, about 2 pm). Not lots 2–4, A or C. No parking fees [S4].
- Zion: large vehicles entering from Springdale can use the large-vehicle lot by the visitor center if there's room [S1].
- Sedona: RVs, campers and buses are not allowed at the trailhead shuttle's Park & Ride lots [S12].
Campground length limits on our routes
"Length" means the whole unit, bumper to bumper. A campground's limit is its longest site; many sites are shorter, so check the individual site before you pay [S6][S7].
| Park | Campground: max length | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Zion | Watchman: loops C and D take no vehicles of 19 ft or more [S2] | Book an RV loop if you're over 19 ft |
| Grand Canyon South Rim | Mather 30 ft · Desert View 30 ft [S6] | Trailer Village closed in 2026 [S4] |
| Arches | Devils Garden: per site, e.g. 40 ft (site 007) or 30 ft (site 042) [S7] | Read the site listing |
| Canyonlands | The Needles: 28 ft combined [S8] | Over 28 ft, stay in Moab |
| Rocky Mountain | Moraine Park 40 · Glacier Basin 35 · Aspenglen 30 · Timber Creek 30 ft [S9] | Longs Peak: tents only |
| Yellowstone | Fishing Bridge RV Park 95 · Bridge Bay 60 · Madison 60 · Grant Village 50 · Canyon 40 · Indian Creek 35 · Mammoth 45 in summer (30 in winter) · Slough Creek and Tower Fall 30 · Lewis Lake 25 ft [S10] | Fishing Bridge: hard-sided RVs only |
| Grand Teton | Gros Ventre and Colter Bay 45 ft · Jenny Lake 14 ft · other campgrounds 30 ft [S11] | Jenny Lake is for tents and small vans |
What this means when you choose a vehicle
- Campervan (about 19–21 ft) [A]: fits every campground above except Jenny Lake's strictest sites and Watchman's tent loops; usually fine for Zion's road east, but check width with mirrors and height with the roof A/C [S1][A].
- Small Class C (about 22–25 ft) [A]: oversized at Bryce and the Grand Canyon, but fits Mather, Desert View, The Needles and most Yellowstone campgrounds [S3][S4][S6][S8][S10]. Zion's road east depends on width and height [S1].
- Large Class C (about 28–31 ft) [A]: plan the UT-20 detour, Moraine Park rather than Timber Creek, Moab rather than The Needles, and check every Devils Garden site [S1][S7][S8][S9].
- Ask the rental company for exact length, width with mirrors and height in writing before you pay a deposit [A].
